FEBRUARY- A MONTH OF GOOD EATING AND SOUPS

Adolph used to make the wedding soup.

Broth.

Meat Balls- very little ones.

Escarola

A delicious simple soup.

So I have made it only using another green veggie as I could not find escarola.

Used of my chicken leg for one broth. The chicken wing tips for another.

I had meat balls that I cut into tiny pieces.

With some parmigiano cheese- ecco- wedding soup.

Of course, I miss the taste of Granpa's soups.

GRANPA MADE SOUPS IN JANUARY- TIME TO WARM THE SOUL

Oh how I miss Adolph's soup.

The aroma in the house.

With fresh buns or bread or toasted garlic bread always a hit.

  • A warm soup on the stove in a large pot. More than enough for one meal.
  • I used to take some to work. It always made for a good lunch.

OH JANUARY AND HOW I MISS GRANPA'S SOUPS

I heard on the radio today asking people what is their comfort food.

Soup was the leader.

So it reminded me how much I miss my husband's homemade soups.

Adolph loved to make soup especially in the cold weather.

Wedding soup.

Escarola
Little meat balls cooked in the oven to cut down on the fat

More soup.

He loved them all. His mother's favourite recipe of Minestra Soup.

Veggie Soup.

Tomato sauce.

I loved the aroma in the house from his soups.

NOVEMBER SOUPS AND STEWS

I  love making soups and stews now that the cooler weather is here. Barb likes the soups. She freezes some containers to take for her lunches. Fast and easy to put in her lunch bag. Frozen then thaws by lunch time. Eggs were on sale so maybe it's time for some homemade egg noodles for pasta. The cooler weather makes it easier to make. The dough holds better. All these food items are available in previous posts. The same old recipes make for good eating. Barb may pull out the bread maker her mother gave her years ago for Christmas. The smell of fresh bread baking would be another wonderful addition to the cooler weather.
Oh for some fresh pasta anyone!
Some soup on the stove.
Barb's favourite- vegetable soup! Maybe I will watch some of those Italian shows for some ideas of new dishes to make my family.

A NEW YEAR FOR COOKING-2015

Ended the 2014 year with lots of good eating and some cooking.

Plenty of seafood during the Christmas season. Of course turkey dinner on Christmas Day.

Fried chicken for picnics or a quick dinner.

But the winter is a great time for soups and sauces. The aroma in the house is very appealing to Barb. She like to use her bread maker her mother gave her years ago to have some fresh bread in the house. The machine does all the work.  Winter is boring without the vegetable garden. I find the fresh vegetables at the stores something to be desired. So a soup that can use soggy or less than fresh veggies works supplying the needed healthy ingredients. Besides for those like myself, time to shed some pounds. Homemade soups without any preservatives or too much sodium can help with that process.

Don't tell Barb but I am looking forward to being dragged to those summer farmers' markets. I have to get through the long winter months. Yes I have been reading some good books and doing my soudokos but there is just so much time to spend indoors. With the purchase of some low priced eggs from Shoppers Drug Mart, maybe the girls will benefit from some homemade pasta. Idle Cook, idle Mind! Here's to a new year of good cooking!

GRANPA IS BACK AFTER A SICK BREAK

After two weeks of being sick, my appetite is back. So is my desire to cook! Barb had picked up the slack of shopping and cooking. The festive season is around the corner so I will be making some of the Italian seasonal dishes again. The colder temperatures bring soups and sauces so the house will have good aroma in it. A daughter's birthday coming so maybe some gnocchi for her as it is her favourite food! Well I do enjoy it too! So much to do, so much to cook!
